Jesus goes to the other side of the Jordan

Jesus was teaching the people when the Pharisees tested Him. They asked if it was lawful for a man to divorce his wife. He responded by asking them:

"What did Moses command you?"

They replied that Moses allowed a man to divorce his wife. Jesus said to them:

"Because of your selfish hearts, Moses allowed you to divorce your wives. But from the beginning of creation God made you male and female. For a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate."

Later, His disciples asked Him the same question. He told them:

"Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery. And if a woman divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery."

Jesus warns people that wealth will not save them

As Jesus walked along the road, a man came running and knelt before Him, asking what he had to do to inherit eternal life. Jesus replied:

"You know the commandments: Do not commit adultery, do not murder, do not steal, do not bear false witness, honor your father and mother."

The man answered that he has followed the commandments all of his life. Jesus looked at him lovingly and said:

"You lack one thing: Go, sell everything you have, give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, take up your cross and follow me."

When the man heard this, he became sad and went away in sorrow, because he was very wealthy. Then Jesus turned to His disciples and said:

"Children, it is extremely difficult for those who trust in their riches to enter the kingdom of God. It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the Kingdom of God."

They were very surprised and wondered who could be saved. Jesus looked at them and said:

"With men it is impossible, but not with God; with God all things are possible."
"Every man that has left his house, family, or lands, for my sake, and the gospel's will receive a hundredfold now in this time, houses, family, and lands, with persecutions. And in the world to come they will receive eternal life."

Jesus tells His disciples about His coming death

As they were going up to Jerusalem, Jesus told them what was going to happen to Him, saying:

"The chief priests will condemn me to death, and hand me over to the Romans. They will mock me, whip me, spit on me, and kill me. But on the third day I will rise again."
